Sewing and Craft course running all year round at The Belle Designs shop at ,New Barn, Battlesbridge antiques centre, Essex. All course are small (max 2 people), friendly and taught by Helen. Beginners guide to Machine Patchwork & Quilting

Cost £30 (Pattern and fabrics included)

This course covers skills needed to make a bag which you can adapt for any outfit. Including how to insert fastenings, linings and pockets, etc. All materials and pattern will be provided.


Get to know your sewing machine!

Cost: £20.00

Just bought a new sewing machine? Never used all the stitches on your old machine? Got a pile of feet that you don't know what to do with?  Or just need a refresher? Then this course is for you.

Bring along your own sewing machine and all the extras you have for it. And we will help you understand all that it can do.


Beginners guide to Machine Patchwork & Quilting
(Making a patchwork cushion)

Time 2 ½ hours (x3)
Three week course cost £70

This course aims to teach beginners how to create patchwork, and how to quilt.

All the fabric will be provided to make a quilted cushion with zip fastening.

Students need to bring a sewing machine, a ¼ inch foot and a walking foot or a free motion/darning foot (a limited number of machines will be available for those without their own machines, but numbers are limited and they will be allocated on a first come basis).To learn all the techniques to complete the cushion kit provided, will take three weeks.

Week 1

  • What basic equipment is needed for Machine Patchwork & Quilting
  • Where to buy equipment
  • Introduction to basic patchwork blocks and how to design future patchwork projects
  • How to choose your fabric, wadding and backing
  • Rotary cutting


Week 2

Topics covered this week:-

  • Learning how to piece blocks together, using a quarter inch foot
  • Learning how to machine quilt


Week 3

Topics covered this week:-

  • Making your patchwork into a cushion
  • Learning how to bind a quilt


A deposit of £25.00 for the full course is required to secure your place. This is only refundable if the course does not run.


Sculpting with threads
(Jewellery making with your sewing machine)

Time 2 hours
Cost £30 (including materials to produce a pair of earrings)

This course aims to introduce you to the world of sculpting with threads by using free hand machine embroidery. It is suitable for anyone with a basic knowledge of their sewing machine.

In the class, students will learn how to use solvable stabiliser, and free hand machine embroidery to make a pair of earrings, and will also learn how to adapt the technique to make brooches, hair decorations, flowers to decorate hats and much more.

Everything will be provided to make a pair of earrings in the colours of your choice, and extra materials will be available to buy to complete other items discussed in the class.

Students need to bring a sewing machine with feed dogs that can be dropped or covered, (a limited number of machines will be available for those without their own machines, but numbers are limited and they will be allocated on a first come basis)


Silk painting for beginners

Time: 2 ½ hours
Cost £35 (including materials to produce a small silk painting)

This course aims to introduce you to the art of silk painting. In the class, students will learn about the fabric and paints used, and learn all the hints and tips to produce to lovely finished piece.

Everything will be provided to make a silk painting measuring at least 6” x 6”. No previous experience is required


Cross Stitch for beginners
(making a greeting card)

Time 2 hours
Cost £30 (including materials to produce a cross stitched greeting card with envelope)

This course aims to introduce you to the art of cross stitch. In the class, students will learn about the fabric used, and how to do all the basic stitches, as well as how to make their finished cross stitch into a greeting card.

Everything will be provided to make one card with a selection of themes to choose from. No previous experience is required.
